For further informaiton regarding EAL please contact Mrs J Wilson, EAL Team Leader

The EAL Department in Sale High School is connected to the Aspire Centre and is dedicated to supporting EAL students throughout their school journey. Students who are identified as EAL are interviewed to assess how much support they need.

What is EAL?

EAL students are students whose first language is not English (EAL = English as an additional language)

How are EAL students supported?

EAL students take part in tutorials outside of normal lessons either in a group or 121. This provides an additional level of support to help improve their English as quickly as possible. They are then matched with a ‘buddy’ in their form and a ‘buddy’ for lessons. The EAL Department has a large collection of dictionaires covering all the languages spoken at Sale High School which students can borrow.

The department also loans out mini laptops for students to use in lessons to help with translation.

We also run EAL Club. This is where many of our EAL students and their friends can meet up, get to know each other and share their experiences. The club is a great way to make new friends, get help with any homework or ask for advice if they need it. It is also a good opportunity for them to practice their spoken English without feeling

EAL Club is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at breaktime and Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime. However staff are always available outside of these times if needed.

Which languages are spoken?

We have students who come from all corners of the world and speak over thirty different languages! Currently we have students who speak Arabic, Afrikaans, Albanian, Bengal, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Creole, Czech, Dutch, Farsi, Fillipino, French, German, Greek, Gujerati, Hakka, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Kurdish, Marathi, Mongolian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Shona, Spanish, Thai, Urdu, Valenciano and Vietnamese!
